Comprehensive Key System Upgrade for an Upper Cape Cod Municipality

Enhancing Security, Safety, and Accountability Across Multiple School Facilities

A facilities manager from a town in the Upper Cape Cod region reached out to our team with an urgent concern: their 30‑year‑old small‑format key system could no longer account for all active keys in circulation. This lack of key control posed both security and liability risks across their municipal and school buildings. The town recognized the need for a modernized, fully accountable, and code‑compliant key system—and they needed a partner capable of guiding them through every stage of the process.

A Collaborative, Multi‑Department Site Survey

To ensure the solution addressed the needs of all stakeholders, we conducted a comprehensive site survey and coordinated meetings with:

  • The facilities manager

  • The police chief

  • The fire chief

  • The school superintendent

  • Members of the school committees

This collaborative approach allowed us to accurately assess existing hardware, document all deficiencies, and help the district justify budgeting for a complete system upgrade.

During this process, the fire chief identified a critical life‑safety concern: several classrooms did not meet code requirements for two means of egress, a requirement triggered by certain room sizes and occupancy classifications. While the majority of their existing hardware still met code, addressing the egress issue became a key priority in the upgrade plan.

A Full Key System Replacement and Hardware Modernization

After assessing the condition of their decades‑old key system, it became clear that a full upgrade was the best long‑term solution. Our team:

  • Replaced the entire key system, establishing complete key control and accountability.

  • Upgraded approximately 90% of the existing door hardware, ensuring modern performance and alignment with life‑safety standards.

  • Ensured all updates supported current and future access needs across the district.

We successfully completed the upgrade for two elementary schools, positioning the district for improved security and streamlined facility operations. Based on the success of the initial phase, we now have the opportunity to continue our work with the middle/high school.

Training for Teachers and Staff

To ensure long‑term success and ease of use, we also provided on‑site lockset and key system training for teachers and staff. This training helped educators:

  • Understand how their upgraded locksets operate

  • Verify proper key functionality

  • Feel confident in emergency lockdown and daily security procedures

This hands‑on education component has continued to support smoother facility operations and staff peace of mind.

A Successful Project with Enthusiastic Feedback

At the conclusion of the project, all decision‑makers—including school leadership, municipal officials, and public‑safety partners—expressed their satisfaction with the solution, the installation process, and the professionalism of our team. The town now benefits from:

  • A modern, fully controlled key system

  • Updated hardware aligned with life‑safety codes

  • Improved coordination among staff and first responders

  • A scalable security foundation for future facility upgrades

Strengthening Security Across Cape Cod’s Educational Facilities

This project demonstrates our commitment to helping municipalities and school districts modernize legacy security systems while meeting strict safety codes and operational needs. By partnering closely with public‑safety leaders and facility decision‑makers, we ensure every upgrade maximizes security, compliance, and long‑term value.

If your organization is facing challenges with outdated hardware or missing key accountability, we’re here to help.
