Rapid Campus Rekeying After a Lost Master Key

By Skip Reid | June 5, 2026

Security incidents do not always involve sophisticated cyberattacks or forced entry. Sometimes, a single lost key can create a significant vulnerability across an entire campus.

Recently, a Massachusetts educational institution faced exactly this situation when a master key controlling access to multiple buildings was lost. Because the key had the ability to override the campus card access system, the institution needed to act quickly to restore security and protect students, faculty, staff, and facilities.

The challenge required more than simply replacing a few locks. It demanded a coordinated response involving key records, hardware, keying expertise, and rapid execution.

The Challenge

The lost master key compromised the exterior door security of nine campus buildings.

Because the key was part of the institution's master key system, anyone in possession of it could potentially gain access to multiple facilities. In addition, the key had the capability to override the campus card reader access control system, creating an elevated security concern.

The institution needed a solution that would:

  • Eliminate the risk associated with the lost key

  • Maintain building security during the transition

  • Minimize disruption to campus operations

  • Be completed as quickly as possible

The Solution

Dugmore & Duncan worked closely with the institution to develop and execute a rapid rekeying strategy.

The first step was obtaining updated keying information. Working with the Key Records Department at SARGENT, Dugmore & Duncan secured the necessary records and ordered a new bitting list to establish a revised key system.

Once the new keying specifications were available, Dugmore & Duncan supplied:

  • New cylinders

  • Key blanks

  • Master keying supplies

  • Additional components from stock inventory

To accelerate the project, members of Dugmore & Duncan's operations and keying teams were dispatched to support the campus locksmith.

Together, the team systematically removed and replaced exterior door cylinders throughout all nine buildings. New keys were cut, cylinders were pinned to the revised specifications, and the updated master key system was implemented.

The Result

Through careful coordination and rapid execution, the institution was able to restore the security of its facilities in just a few days.

The project successfully:

  • Rekeyed exterior door access across nine buildings

  • Eliminated the security risk associated with the lost master key

  • Preserved the integrity of the existing access control system

  • Minimized disruption to campus operations

  • Reduced the duration of the security exposure

By leveraging manufacturer relationships, in-house keying expertise, inventory availability, and field support resources, Dugmore & Duncan helped the institution quickly regain control of its security infrastructure.
